[En règle générale, j’écris mes billets d’abord en anglais, pour la version anglaise de ce blog, puis je les traduis en français pour ce blog. J’ai ici volontairement laissé les citations de la Déclaration d’Indépendance des États-Unis en anglais, puisqu’il s’agit du document d’origine. J’ai également laissé les liens vers les pages en anglais, plus fidèles, je pense. En fin de billet, j’ai ajouté quelques liens vers des pages en français sur le document]

Aujourd’hui, 4 juillet, c’est l’anniversaire des États-Unis d’Amérique. Aujourd’hui, en 1776, la Déclaration d’Indépendance était adoptée. La Déclaration d’Indépendance a été rédigée par Thomas Jefferson, et est l’un des documents historiques les plus chers au peuple américain.

C’est aussi l’un des documents les plus chers aux défenseurs de la liberté et des droits individuels.

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

Une copie de la Déclaration d’Indépendance écrite de la main de Thomas Jefferson, ainsi qu’une copie du Bill of Rights d’origine, étaient visibles à la New York Public Library du 1er au 3 juillet. Les photos n’étaient pas autorisées. J’avais pour la première fois pu voir la Déclaration d’Indépendance à la bibliothèque de New York en 2004.
